Hope someone has an answer to my problem. I work for the local Transit Authority and we maintain all of the ambulances for the county. The whole fleet is F350s and they were ordered from Ford with the ambulance package. The problem is that the brakes are the same as standard F350 that you can buy from your local dealership. We cannot keep brakes on these vehicles. Our average mileage between brake jobs is from 3,000 to 6,000 miles. The main problem is the calipers. The dust boots are tearing and melting. I know this is do to heat. I was wondering if anyone knew of a possible solution. I have tried different brake pads and different rotors, but that is not curing the problem. I have tried to find larger disks and I am unable to find them . Part of the problem is that the front rotors and hub are a one piece part and I have been unable to find anything larger. Any help would be appreciated. Hopefully I have explained the problem fully to you. If not, let me know. Thanks, Keith
Have you tried to find drilled and slotted rotors for the vehicles. Maybe this will help with the heat problem. How much do the ambulances weigh? Could they be overloaded? I have a 2001 F-350 and have problems with my brakes. Mostly, warped rotors. The pads wear fine.
They weigh around 15,000 lbs. I can find drilled/slotted rotors, but they are the rotor only(front) and I need the hub and rotor assembly together. Also these ambulances have dual rear wheels. Motorcraft makes a rotor that they list as a "severe duty" rotor, part #BRR-93(front)and BRR-96(rear). They also list a "severe duty" pad, part #BRSD-757(rear) and BRSD-756(front). These part #'s were given to me by a guy at "Ford Fleet". They have helped some , but we are still having unusual brake wear. Maybe these part #'s will help you out on your personal vehicles.
These were ordered from Ford as an ambulance package. I would have to think that they know the kind of weight that will need to be supported.By the way, these are "Superduty" vehicles.
Yep 15,000 is too much for the 350. I thought the max on a 350 is 11,500.
Also you said "The main problem is the calipers. The dust boots are tearing and melting. I know this is do to heat." So the brakes are doing what they are supposed to do, turn momentum into heat. Sounds like you already know what needs to be done, more cooling.
You did not say you had a warping problem or fade issues. I think cross drilling and slotting will only help fade issues by allowing the pad outgassing gas a path to escape.
