I purchased my 96 F-250 a few months ago. I looked it over real good and the air filter was clean so I didn't look at the turbo. I recently changed the filter and removed all of the intake hose and looked at the turbo. Well, the blades are eroded on the leading edges and one is slightly bent at the tip. (The wheel has no endplay or sideplay)
The truck idles perfectly, has gobs of power, and doesn't smoke or use oil. Could I have a hidden problem that will show up in the future or you think I got lucky and the engine is okay?
Anyone else in a similar situation?
If the truck is running well, and you are making the proper amount of boost, I would not worry about it right now. It's possible it may play a factor later down the road. But there is not much you can do for something that was done in its past life.
One thing you must do now, is ensure it does not continue and become worse. Make sure to check your airbox carefully to make sure that it is sealing good. Clean all your hoses and airbox out good with a plastic/rubber safe air intake cleaner. If the airbox is not sealing good, get rid of it, and go to an aftermarket air intake setup. Just because it had a clean filter in it, could actually be a sign that is was not sealing well, and doesnt necessarily mean that the air-intake system was looked after.
Thanks guys,
I will plan on at least replacing the airbox and maybe the wheel. Like I said, it runs great so maybe the engine will last a long time if I fix the source of the problem now.
ditch the airbox and replace it with a tymar and don't worry about dusting if all the hoses are good and i would replace the wheel soon to prevent future problems... just my $.02
