I have a 01 supercrew 4.3 , one day it runs fine the next it wont start. garage guy hauls it away says he pushes the schrader valve on fuel rail it gives a little burp. He gets it running checks fuel pressure, ignition, plugs everything is ok. No codes at all. It seems to run fine now but I am sure that it will quit 2 hours from home. He says there was air in the fuel line and it wasnt getting gas. I didnt let it run out of gas to get air in the lines. Any thoughts on how or if this could happen spontainiously? The truck only has 43k on it and is bone stock.
What exactly does it do when it won't start? Does it crank over or nothing at all? Maybe its a plugged up fuel filter? Has it been changed? Just a thought.
Sounds like our Expedition when the IAC was clogged and faulty.
Would start, then not, then start. No code was ever thrown.
Replaced the IAC and no probs.
Might have a fuel pump going bad. How many miles on the truck? Next time it quits, if you dont have a fuel pressure guage. Listen for the fuel pump to cycle. turn off every thing and listen closely for a little whine then it will stop. Might have a friend listen at the fuel tank for the pump to start then stop. If it wont start, try tapping the bottom of the fuel tank with a hammer with the key on, the tank is strong, so give it a firm tap, just dont slam the tank with a 10lb sledge.
Hah! I figured it was a typo on 4.2. When the Expedition
wouldn't start and run right, I changed the fuel filter twice.
No change. It would run when I gave it a lot of gas upon
ignition, but of course you aren't supposed to do that with a fuel injection engine.
Changing the Idle Air Control solved it all.
