I have a 2002 F-150 XLT with only about 3000 miles on it, basically because I drive an older truck to work. Anyway, after having not driven it for about 2 months, I decided to drive it today. To my amazement, the darn thing would not start. It would turn over but would die immediatly. Since, it is still under warranty, I figured I would have to have it towed to the dealer, but decided to try this great forum first. I found a thread that seemed to speak of similar symptoms on a 1998 F-150. The solution given in the thread was to tap on the IAC valve, because it may just be stuck. This was a great suggestion, because that's what I did and it started right up. My question is......with my truck being just under 2 years old with hardly any miles on it, does this seem normal? Should I try to get the Ford dealer to change the IAC valve under warranty, although they will probably say they can't find any problems with it? This just seems too early to be worrying with this type of problem on a truck of this age. Any suggestions or comments would be welcome. Thank you.
Low mileage is one thing, low mileage and long storage is another. All kinds of problems can develop from inactivity... battery problems, gumming up of the fuel system, vapor/water contamination, seal leaks, etc. And consider that your truck may have sat on a lot for months before you even purchased it. Drive that baby more often and keep its juices flowing.. It will serve you better.. IMHO
This is goofy question, but here goes. Where is the IAC on a '99 5.4?
It's not in the same place as a '97 4.6, and a mechanic
replaced ours before I found this forum and learned to
change the 4.6 IAC myself. I see the EGR, but not the IAC.
Thanks in advance. Also, the EGR port clogging problem, is
that a 5.4 thing as well, or strictly all 4.6? This site rocks.
The IAC should be behind and to the left of the throttle body.
If you remove the black plastic cover over the throttle body you should be able to find it.
Looking at the throttle body, behind and to the left?
I didn't see it. I'll take the cover off and look again
tonight. On the 4.6, it's behind and to the right when
looking at it. Is it the same cylindrical shape?
On the EGR port clogging, I've never gotten a response to whether
this carbon buildup also happens in 5.4's. I know the set up is a little different. Thanks.
