410 getting hot

This winter I built a 410 engine for my mudtruck. I have about 1000 miles on it, so I decided to go see what it could do. Running the truck on the highway the temp read about 160 to 180, but as soon as I hit the trail and started pushing it it started to climb. The radiator was gone through when I built the engine, and the thermostate is not the problem. It got up to 215 and stayed. Is this to high? thanks,

tyler

My 390 runs good temp down the road but low speeds and idling that is another story. I don't know weather its a fe thing or that i need a fan shroud. Best thing is to keep it full of coolant of course.

My 410 will never see the highway tho. It will spend aprox. 1 minute running 4000 and up RPMs through mud which gets em hot in a hurry.

extra rpm and driving in low gears heats them up in a hurry as well. You might have to buy some coolant fluid that reduce temp or take out the thermostat.

The mystery is my 360 i raced last year never got hot. It was in the same truck. I tried running w/o the thermostat, but it didn't seem to make much of a diff. Could a person go with a four core radiator? would that help?

Also I have the timing at the factory for a 410, but I want more throttle response. What could I set it at?

I would say a four core would be a good investment for the kind of driving you do with your truck, also you could consider one or more electric fans.
Also 6-8 degrees before top dead center is my recomendation.

Your problem is you've got a lot of load without much air going through the radiator. What temperature thermostat have you got in it? Have you got the fan shroud on it? Have you got the stock flex fan on it, or an electric? If I were you, I'd get an electric and simply place it in front of the stock fan, having it come on at about 180 degrees.

Also, a higher flow water pump never hurts.

I agree with the guys above...

I have a 70 F250 390/C6.. I use to have a 12' overhead on it and pulled a trailer with the race car in tow....It never got hot at sea level...but some of the tracks I ese to go too were in the high Desert 4000 plus ft.

I took the 3 row rad, out and went to a 4 row Desert cooler and a fan shroud.. The end of problem! And of course 50/50 water and coolant mix.. Good Luck-Russ

Where'd you get the 4-core radiator? Mine likes to get hot in the summer with the AC on.

getting hot

i have two off road rigs, one full size and one smaller.the four core radiator is a must for any type of slow off road work.next is to run a good reputeable electric fan unit.(black magic) it may cost you alittle more but is an extra 50 bucks realy worth hikeing out of the woods on foot?when you buy an electric fan make shure it is a bolt in unit or has the plastic pins that go through the radiator.the copper and the steel pins will actually rip your radiator open from the constant jerking and vibration of off roading.
