Cam Swap in Progress

Well, I have most of the parts torn down to do the cam and roller rocker swap on my Explorer. It is a 302 with the GT40 heads. I am putting in an E303 cam with 1.6 roller rockers - springs and all. I am to the point of taking the cam and roller rockers off and starting the swap. Any advice or notes anyone wants to add? Its the first cam and rocker swap I have done, so I just want to make sure I have all my basis covered.

Don't know what type of power I am going to see with this addition, but I know it will be beneficial, especially with the Eaton being already installed also (going back on with rest of install). The cam that FMC puts in the Explorers are not worth mentioning, so anything would help...

Anytime I install roller rockers on the pedestal mount heads, I always use the conversion kit that converts the pedestal to a 3/8 stud. Crane Cams makes it and it is only about $80. You can then use valve guides and the Chevrolet type adjustable roller rockers. I used Ford racings 1.6 roller rockers on a couple of different engines and coud not keep them straight at high rpm. Ended up swapping them over to stud also.

The ped. rockers are probably o.k. if you plan to hold it under 6500 rpm.

The Explorer computer will not go above 6000, so I should be good on that note. That is one of the reasons I went with the E303 instead of some of the more aggressive cams. Crane had some good choices also, but for the range I am looking at, the E was cheaper (I got a friend at Ford), and the Cranes were about the same power and duration in that range. The 1.6's also seem to do better than the 1.7's in the Explorer because of the electronics. Since I don't want to get into changin all the elctronics out yet, these seemed to be the best choice right now.

I have used the b303, never used the e303. The b-303 with gt40-p heads, headders, 9.75 I compression, weiand stealth manifold and 600 carter will just barely hit 7K. The e303 should be an excellent cam for that engine, but it is well capable of more than 6k with the right ignition system. If it were my engine, I would I assume that the explorer has an automatic transmission. I hope you dont have a problem with the stock stall converter.

Yes - automatic. The Explorers with 302's only came with autos. The computer will not even support a manual. I think the E is rated up to 6500, so it should be ok.

The stall converter is another project for another day. I think it will be alright for now, but I am leaning on doing something with it later. Still have some research to do on that - plus I want to see how the stock does first.
