Brake Rotor Question

I've got a 97 Ranger 4x4 with factory installed manual hubs. I'm getting ready to replace the rotors and the Haynes manual says that you need a four-prong spanner wrench to remove the outer wheel bearing. My questions are:

1) do I have to have this tool or can the removal be done safely without it
2) if I do need this tool where can I get it and how much will it cost

My bronco had a similar bearing nut. I don't know if this is the same type of deal, but the tool looked like an oversized socket with 4 teeth on the end of it. You can usually rent the kit from the auto parts store, but I just ended up buying one for $10-$20. Again, i'm not sure if this is the same thing for the ranger, but it sounds similar.

Thanks for the reply. What you described is exactly what I was looking for. I went to the local NAPA store and picked one up for about $25. I didn't want to pay that much but they were the only place in town that had one.

No problem. Now let me also add a small bit of advice...be VERY carefull when you put those nuts back on. The spindle threads are very narrow and closely spaced. I managed to jump a thread and ended up having to replace the entire spindle...NOT fun....so if it doesn't go on smoothly, do NOT force it. Have fun!
