I'm trying to replace the front brake rotors on a 97 Ford Explorer (AWD, 5.0 L). I've removed the calipers and pads - but can not loosen the old rotors. Any sugguestions or tips would be appreciated. It lloks held on by rust - but do I need a special rotor pulling tool?
The first time I did the brakes on my Cobra the rotors were stuck to the hubs from corrosion. I ended up having to rent a big gear puller to pop the rotors off. The same thing should work for you.
When you reassemble, use a light coating of anti-seize compound between the rotor and hub. They won't stick anymore.
i have a 92 4x4 f150 with automatic hubs that i would like to replace the rotors on. the new rotors looked like slip ons but seem to be more complicated. is there a special way of pulling the rotor.
A lot of the rotors that are slip on (what I mean is separate from the all in one hub rotor combo), will sieze themselves to the surface of the hub. They can usually be jarred loose by hitting them with a hammer on the flat surfaces between the lug studs. Some rotors have pre tapped holes in them on the flat surface also. If yours have these, you can screw in the appropriate sized bolt into the hole and by tightening the bolt, push the rotor off the hub. Big hammer usually works pretty quick and easy, though. Hope this applies to your situation!
but at closer look the disc has a plate in front of it to the outside that is attached to a cylinder shape tube. im guessing thats housing the hub insides like a chevy hub and the rotors slip on after that assembly is taken off.
on my dad's 97 f150 4x4 we had the same problem. no gear puller could pull those things off. we had to get a seteline tourch (sp?), heat it red hot, beat on it w/sledge hammers, and then repeat the process a few more times, letting it completely cool between each heating to help break the seal. they can be a real pain in the butt.
Yeah i have got a 97 f-150 4x4 and the rotors are stuck on right now. Everyone I talk too says the same, thing brake them off. This looks like a ford problem to me!!!!!
In adding to this post my F-150 SuperCrew is having the same problem. I am hesitant to apply extreme heat for the possibilty of damaging any front end seals. Hell with 255,000 Miles, I should change them anyway but removal is becoming a 2 weekend project and the ain't off yet!
