Can someone tell me if the front hub and bearings are sealed unit or are the front bearings replaceable. This is on a 2000 F350 SD 4x4. Im wanting to replace my bearings and didnt know if you have to buy the entire hub assembly.
The bearings are a sealed (non-repackable) unit on 4WD, however the 2WD units are repackable. They are replaceable, however you will also want to replace the seals ($30 item only available at stealership.)
The hub can be removed easily via a locking clip. A good preventive maintenance measure is to remove the hubs quarterly and soak them in ATF for an hour or so, while every 15 minutes working in the ATF by rotating from free to lock repeatedly for a minute.
So I need to buy the entire hub assembly . How much do these usually cost?If I remember correctly it is attached from the back with four bolts. I hope I can find this somewhere else besides the stealership
Are you getting a grinding noise (like going over rumble strips) with the hubs in free? If thats the case, your spindle bearing is trash. This is a $10 item and is replaceable by removing the hub assembly via the four bolts on the back. Hopefully it hasn't scored the stub shaft, otherwise thats about a $300 item, if you can get the dealer to order just the outer stub shaft.
The sealed bearing I am referring to is the one on the axle stub shaft, this bearing is pressed onto the stub shaft and is a PITA to change without "special tools." This is the one that requires the $30 FOMOCO only O-ring.
My local dealer quoted the price for the hub assembly once at $418 each and another time at $425 each. A couple weeks later, I went in there on a Saturday, about 30 minutes before they were to close up for the day. Evidently they hadn't sold enough to justify being open on Saturday or something, because the guy came down to $350, tax and all. He even threw in a free o-ring. I still felt bad about spending that much, but not quite as bad as I would have if I had bought it at $418 or $425.........
