I want to buy either exhaust or headers for my truck, but I can't decide which one. Headers make more horsepower, but exhuast makes your truck sound better. Which one should I get?
I would do the whole thing, but it is expensive. You could just put a new muffler in to make it louder and put headers on it with a new Y-pipe for a sort of compromise.
yeah, definitly do the whole enchalada at once. You'll get the most gain this way. Save your nickles until you can get it all done, you'll be glad you did!
My 351 has Edelbrock headers, no cats, 2 1/2" pipe all the way out the back with new Magnaflow mufflers. Sure does sound good to me. Luckily it was all done (except the Magnaflows) when I bought the truck. Otherwise I'm not a big fan of headers due to gasket problems and rust.
Also the engine is mildly built with aluminum heads, intake, K&N FIPK, throttle body and more.
Trick i learned about for headers, If they do start to leak just remove them and cut the flange so that you will have 4 separate flanges and reinstall.
Alot of the leakage problems associated with headers is due to the bolts loosening from the expansion and contraction from the heat. Between good headers with thick flanges and using a locking style header bolt like the "Stage 8" header bolts these problems can be a thing of the past. Now the rust can also be behind you with newer stainless steel and ceramic coated headers.
I found the best thing for me is to leave the cat on but use a cherryboom to replace the muffler. This sounds good and gives me more power cheap. The cat is a good thing for pollution.
Headers sound doesnt mean squat if you cant back it up. also if you want something that sounds different and is cheap go by tracto supply and buy a tractor muffler. Trust me it sounds unlike anything else.
Headers make more power, period. No matter what kind of muffler you put on behind a stock manifold you'll never get the same power and sound you would with headers and a free flowing exhaust.

Thats the first time i've heard that suggestion, interesting.
At the minimum of this modification, I would put a flowmaster muffler on the stock exhaust (like what, 40-50 bucks). Maybe a chrome tip, and new headers/y-pipe. Leave the 2nd cat (a new one for the front should come in the y-pipe) or get a new hi-flow (about 60 bucks) for the rear cat.
I second the tractor muffler, took the muffler of an Allis Chamlers and put it on my ranger. It was an odd sound, kinda like a cracked exhaust manifold but worse.
