I have a 89 F-150 4X4 with a 5.0 and a mazda 5-speed trans. It will not stay in 5th gear and 4th sometimes jumps out when you let the clutch out, it is also starting to whine(fluid got low and did not relize it until to late). I would like to know if there is a stronger 5-speed that I could install. I would like to put a 6-speed in it if possible. This is my daily driver so I need to be able to change the trans in a weekend and soon before it completely goes out. If it is not possible to change to a different trans does anybody know where I can get a good rebuilt/reman unit for a decent price.
I have been at several junkyards lately and have seen quite a few pre 92's lately. But never bother to look at the trannies. I know when my fluid got low my tranny was around $1200 and I did the labor to remove and replace! Very expensive lesson.
Ask your local junkyard which trannies will fit they should have a book that cross references parts. Maybe one from an E150 van will work if you change the shift lever?
The ZF Tranny would be a better 1. I don't know if your transfercase will fit though. Check out http://www.txchange.com/trans.htm. I bought all my parts from them, good prices and they'll be able to tell you if the case will fit the ZF.
I have given up on junk yards because very few people know that these trannys take automatic tranny fluid and not gear oil. The gear oil does the same damage as running it low. Thanks for the web sit, I will call them tomarrow. I thought that the ZF tranny was a 4 speed??
I checked and it was $800 to have a ZF built at a local tranny shop, I have also heard since yours is a 4 wheel drive that on some of the t-case will work if you use a your stock driveshaft. Not completely sure on the details on that though
