96 150, inline 6(4.9L) code 420

Hi yall,
I got a 1996 Ford 150 XL, inline six, 4.9 L. check engine light came on. GOt a 420 code. My first truck I bought back in 1996. Had it since. Never dealt with this problem. Can you all give me some ideas where to begin and how to troubleshoot this. converter problem???O2 sensor problem???? I got 92, 000 miles on it. Thanks for you input

Assuming it's code P0420, it sounds like you have a bad catalytic converter. It could also be a bad O2 sensor I suppose.

Curiosity, How did you get your 420 code? I have been unable to get any data from my OBDII connector under the dash. Did you hook up to your OBD connector or some other magical location.

yepo just hook it up and you should gt your code. If your not gettign a code check you fuse. YOu could have a fuse blown ( i think it the one that controls your cig lighter) double check though

if P0420 is the code, Actron calls out
Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 1

Thanks for your input. Yep the fuse (#16) was blown. New fuse fixed the OBDII link problem.

I too have a check engine light on in my 96 F150 4.9, I ran the codes with my Actron scanner and got the code P0420. The truck seems to be running fine I can't believe the cat would be bad. Where should I start trouble shooting?
