fuel line question

hi all. i have 78 f-250 400cid. when is shut down should fuel remain in the fuel lines? when i look at my clear fuel filter and sometimes there is no fuel there like it slows gets sucked back into the tank. sometimes the fuel it does stay at the filter. my filter is between the pump and carb and is new. i can't see any fuel leaks but might i have some sort of pressure leak or something? i hope this made sense thanx to you all. great site and great people always willing to help.

It sounds like a vent problem in the tank if all your lines are leak free and no drips from the pump. If your tank is not venting you could have a slight negative pressure in the tank pulling the fuel back. I would check the vent tube and cap. You could try a new vented cap or leave yours on loose to see if it continued or quit.
