Guys, I recently purchased a turbo timer. It is a simple device that basically shuts off the engine 2 minutes after the key is removed. My question is if this is a long enough idle time?? I just had a shop tech tell me I needed one that would idle up to 10 minutes. I have a +110 superchips program, air intake, 4" turbo back exhaust (no muffler) installed. I don't hot rod it too much, so for normal driving would the 2 minute timer be okay??
Not quite sure why you even need the timer if you use it for a daily driver, and don't hot rod it around. Enlighten me a little. I am in the same boat. My Pyro doesn't get hot so I am just curious of the need for a turbo timer.

First of all, I don't have a pyro installed yet....that's next on my list. Second, the stock manual says to let your engine idle before shutting down. I figure will all my mods that I've really gotta be careful to prevent the coking in the turbo bearings from the hot oil not getting circulated out and replaced with cooler oil. So therefore, I have this 2 minute timer, but don't know if it's going to be good enough. I guess if I am hot rodding it excessively I'll just manually let it idle for awhile.
Two min. should be fine. I run heavy equipment for a living and Cat says 5min. but thats after running wide open throttle and working the machine hard. 10 min. is to long and only a waste of fuel.
Looked in the manual it says only after heavy towing and prolonged high speeds do you need to let the engine cool down at a slow idle. This should be done 7-10 minutes. So your 2 min timer should be fine for everyday driving. Just remember to let it cool off longer if you are towing or running on the free way for long periods of time.
I just installed my turbo timer on Saturday and love it. Under normal driving conditions, My pyro reads 400-450 post turbo when I park. Mine is programmable from 1-250 minutes of idle time, I usually do 3-4 and it gets it down around 250 when it shuts off. It's just kind of wierd walking away from the truck with the keys in my hand and have it still running! I like it, I think it's a good improvement. BTW, Mine is caled the Diesel Turbo Lifesaver, see www.mrtruck.com for a better description of it.
Yea the idle TIME isn't the issue but the pyro TEMP! I would rather sit and wait and spend that money on mods than some fancy timer - but whatever floats your boat! Sometimes if I just coast into a parking lot I'm already at 300* pre-turbo, but I've had to wait almost 10 minutes for the temp to come down after a hard pull too!
