2002 XLT, 4X4, 4.0L, 5-speed manual.
Get solid 19mpg city & mixed driving; 21+mpg straight highway driving.

If your truck is starting, idling, and running okay, then the status of tune is probably acceptable. As mentioned previously - keep your foot out of it.
I'm old, and I drive like I'm old. But my mileage is acceptable for the size engine, vehicle weight, and the fact that it's a 4X4 without lockout hubs.
However, in contrast to what Distilld said, my truck seldom sees 2700 - 3000 rpm s, except as shift points, and if I'm "cruising" at steady speed and my rpm s exceed 2000, I'm probably grabbing the next gear (unless going uphill or otherwise under load). I do not "lug" it, however, I normally utilize the highest gear appropriate for the conditions and speed being driven, and I accelerate slowly.
Advise given regarding properly inflated tires, etc., is sound advise. Tire size will also effect fuel consumption.

AV8R: I second that, I didn't get quite that much of an increase but I went from about 14 to 16 consistently after goiing Synthetic.

Mike W: 70 mph in 5th, that puts your RPM's at about 3k or just under right?? Like I said, if I can keep my RPM's around 3k I'm in good shape. Heck 3K is just where the 4.0L starts making power, average shift points should be 3500 to 4000 in my opinion.

Sorry, Quackhead, but I'd go with Dad's advise this time. Changing from dino oil to synthetic in a high-mileage engine is not something that I would do, personally. Maybe with a really good engine flush first, ya might pull it off. But why chance it? Also, be aware that you would increase your potential for oil leaks if switching to synthetic at this point.

them only issue with switching to synthetic in an older vehicle is that because it flows better, it will find leaks better. On the other hand, it is less likely to burn in the cylinders, so if you're leaking oil at all you may not want to, but other than that it will not harm your engine, can prolong engine life and may give you slightly better mileage, although most people do not notice much of a difference. Anyways, the oil issue is a whole other thread so I won't go any further. The chip I have is the Diablo Delta 2-stage.

A chip modifies your timing and fuel curves, giving you better power but you need to run 93 gas. Check out our parts store motorhaven.com for pricing and we have a chip forum here too.
