4.6 Surging

Surging and hard to start somethings. When the engine is cold I have to give it a little gas "only sometimes" and then it starts with a puff of smoke. Smells like raw fuel. Seems to be loading up? 110k on engine just did a major tune up. Plugs, wires, fuel filter, all fluids, and injector cleaning at Ford dealer. The problem was there before tune up. I did do a search before I posted, just didn't feel results pertained to my situation. Thanks, Dan

When you say "surging", do you mean while driving, or are you referring to an erratic idle?

I assume that your search covered the symptoms of a defective IAC valve, which you don't feel applies. If I'm wrong, a bad/dirty IAC would be the first place I'd start.

The problem is at idle.

I not sure what a IAC valve is. You would think the dealer would catch something like this.

IAC valve, a.k.a. Idle Air Control valve. This valve regulates air flow into the engine at idle. Essentially, a small electric motor opens and closes a gate in an air passage. Don't count on the dealer to pick this up. IAC valves can stick just occassionally, not cause a "Check engine" code. If it didn't happen while the truck was in the dealer's hands, it could have been missed. Do a search on "IAC replacement" on this site.

Had this same problem on a 1991 Bronco once. Changed the IAC and fixed it. Don't remember the cost, but just mounted with two bolts. Only took 15 minutes or so. Dont know if it would be that easy on an Expedition or not. Call NAPA or Autozone and price them. Think I got mine at NAPA.
