my dad and i are going to check out an 89' f250 7.3l diesel tommorow. and since this will be my first time with a diesel what should be some things i should look out for? my dad owns a mack c600 so he knows whats what but are there any differences that i should be aware of? i know enough to check the body, rust, clutch ect. but i really dont want to get something like my last truck (87 ranger 2x4 5 sp, p.o.s., dead after 4 monthes) the guy is asking 4,000$/ best offer. what would be a reasonable start?
some info: 1989 f250 7.3L, 5 speed manual, 4x4, regular cab, no rust underneath, very few dime size spots over rear wheel wells.
thanks very much for any info at all.
That's a prime canidate for pinholed cylinders. If they go you have to get another engine. Check the cooling system out to see if it's been maintained. If you see any old bottles of stop leak lying around, RUN!
well we went today and my dad said it sounded good and everything, started right up after hanging around since january. the guy seems to have taken good care of it, no rust engine sounded good. some recent stuff hes done: new exhaust, glow plugs, clutch, ford factory doors, lower cab corners, alternator, brakes all around, and one of the gas tanks. he said the main reason he had gotten such a big truck was because hes like 6'7" and used it mainly for to and from work and pulling a small trailer once in a while. the last time he had it on the road it was going 15-16 mpg and passed inspection last october. he took my offer of 3000 and il get it sometime this week with my income tax return. thanks for the help and ill be back once i get it.
thanks
Before you buy it, try it real good once more. Have your dad work the hell out of the motor and then stand behind it and see if you can smell anti freeze from the exhaust after it idles for a while. Also, ask the owner if he used cooling system treatment (not antifreeze enhancer or water pump lube ) at any time. If he gives that silly look, leave it there. Good luck.
