I have a cheap manual for my truck but it doesn't realy go into detail on what the maintenance should be and at what intervals it should be done at. What things should I be doing to keep my truck in top running form?
I replace my fuel filter every other oil change and have not had to replace anything other than the injection pump for over 200k miles. If u dont when the coolant was last changed, change it and put the addative in. I have changed the diff fluids, transfer case and trans fluid twice- when I changed the clutch.
Check fluid levels daily windshield washer fluid, oil, power steering, brake master cylinder, clutch master cylinder or auto tranny and coolant. Take a minute or two and look around the truck for things worn, leaking or loose.
Check belts, lights, tires and tire pressure weekly.
Change oil and filter, grease the chassis and driveline, check fluid level in transfer case, manual tranny and differentials every 3000 miles.
Rotate tires every 3000 miles.
Change fuel filter 6000 miles.
Diesel Kleene or some other fuel system cleaner every 1000 miles or so is also a good idea.
I like to run some Stadyne IP lube through mine every other fillup.
Change coolant every year and use Supplimental Coolant Addatives (Which one you use depends on the antifreeze you use) and check SCA levels every month.
Drain water seperator monthly, more often if you get water out of it.
Check glow plugs right before winter, that is when you need them most and they are easier to change while you can feel your fingers.
Get your batteries load tested before cold weather sets in, replace if they are weak.
This is also a good time to change wiper blades.
Changing tranny, transfer case and differential fluids yearly is also a good thing, more so in cold climates.
During the cold weather you need to use a blended fuel to prevent fuel gelling.
Even with blended fuel an unusual cold snap or unusually cold weather for your area and you will need to use an anti gelling fuel addative. How much is based on the temperature.
