I am new at working on brakes and I need a little help. I have a '74 f100 that I tried to get inspected here recently, however, they wouldn't pass it due to a small hair-line crack in my left front brake hose. They wanted to charge $80 to fix....so I will do what most country boys will do, attempt to fix it myself. Is it a hard job? I heard that you have to have special brake tools. Any help will greatly be appreciated. Thanks, Jason
It helps to use line wrenches. They help prevent rounding the corners on the line fittings. Go to the parts house and get (or order) a new line and a bottle of the correct brake fluid and change the line and bleed the brakes. If one line is bad I would check the others as well.
For 2x4, you can buy hoses pre made. If you have to make your own hose, 4x4, then order it from the NAPA hydraulic catalog. I made my own, for more info search the 1967-1972 forum using "hoses F-100 napa" for the part numbers, that should bring it up.
Get brand name flare nut wrenches. A good wrench can make the difference between a saved fitting or a rounded off one. When loosening an old bleeder value, use some WD-40 and a socket. THEN use a bleeder wrench to tighten/loosen as you bleed the brakes.
