Today, on my way to a crawfish boil on the lake, my rear universal joint housing on the drive shaft broke and the drive shaft dropped.
I got under there and noticed the transfer case was soaked with fluid and it was smoking. However, I took the drive shaft off, put the truck in 4x4 and drove it home with front wheel drive.
Does anyone have any expirience with this, I would have to think that something had to bind up to cause the housing to break....either the rear end, or the transfer case.
I had just drove 60 miles so everything was probably hot so the fluid was probably just burning off everything. It had been sort of humming for a while and vibrating when I got to a certain speed. It sort of seemed like it could have been an unballanced tire(s). It now seems that was not the case. When it did break, I was turning a corner, no out of the ordinary driving but when it broke , it just straight broke............all of a sudden I heard a big pop then I heard the drive shaft flopping around.
Sounds like it may have started with a bad u-joint and progressed from there. Then the big gator that you ran over on his way to the craw-fish boil grabbed ahold of your driveshaft and wrestled it down the rest of the way. I think he wanted to get there before you. Question is, did he? LOL
Horton, you are exactly right... I took the universal out of the housing and it was in the worst shape that I've ever seen one in. Now I just need to figure out why my transfer casse was so wet.
