Gas is a rip off. Here the cheapest regular is $1.69 and I drive a fullsize Bronco. What the hell is up with this? Is there anyone on here that is more educated on this matter than I am? Will our gas ever go down?
A couple years ago I was paying half the price, that was a bargain. Why would twice the price be a bargain? What am I missing? I realize that in several years, $1.69 will be the good old days......but we're not there yet.
Value is in the eye of the beholder, no doubt, but we are soooo spoiled with gas prices in this country. The result is that we drive fuel-inefficient vehicles, consider low gasoline prices to be a birthright, and breathe more than our share of carbon monoxide, etc. I know the market is supposed to take care of these things, but I just don't see that happening. Unfortunately, there is no incentive to oil companies or the government to reduce consumption. And I don't think this wastefulness is good for us in the long run.
The government (all administrations) sets its foreign policy on the continuation of plentiful supply and low price. We are like welfare recipients that whine and complain when there are cuts in our checks. We act like $2.00 gas is going to drive us into the poorhouse. Keep gas prices low and the band fiddlin' and everybody's happy.
We don't fight these mid-east wars for big oil, we do it so you and I can drive our gas guzzlers.
That's it - it's Ernie's fault, not mine!! Thank Goodness I found someone to blame it on.
On edit: BTW, Ernie's my old '60 F-100. I forgot that my signature doesn't show at the bottom of the posts anymore.

We've been over and over on this the past few weeks. Gas would be a bargain at twice the price.
At twice the price it would cost me $108.16 to fill my Bronco if it was completely empty and would last me 300 miles if I'm lucky. I'd be working for gas only. How is this a bargain? If we put $10 in our tank we should get 10 gallons. I suppose high gas prices will increase locking gas cap sales.
It certainly did (increase the sale of locking gas caps) in the early '70s when gas went from 30 cents to 50-60 virtually overnight. I'm not going to make the same arguments we've hashed out many times here lately on gas prices. Do a search, there are some good threads already on the subject.
BTW, another reason the government will try to hold the line on gas price increases is the fact that rising gas prices are highly inflationary. Everything uses energy in its production and distribution, therefore energy prices are passes along to the consumer through higher prices.
Bottom line, there's no need to panic over these little bumps in the yellow brick road.
