I purchased my first truck this afternoon, a 2004 (07-JAN-04 engine) F-350 PSD Lariat in Toreador Red! What a great truck.
No longer wannabe status and I am a proud Ford owner!!! Thanks to all on this forum....I've been lurking here for about a year reading about the different trucks and the saga of the 6.0l. Even considered a 2000 7.3l for a few months but once you drive a 6.0l, it's stinkin' hard to go back.
I looked hard about 6 months for a good used one but finally, the wife and I decided that we were too picky, and for about $4K extra, we could get a new truck with what we wanted, and wasn't a Canadian Lease Return (read used & abused by oilfield foremen).
Some of the trucks we looked at from Canada were very rusty underneath and had been driven hard. They also had Feb-03 build dates and I was not wanting to take a chance on a well used 2003 truck at the $34K mark.
Any tips from the more experienced diesel owners out there? I hear a K&N filter is a must! Other thoughts??
Congratulations and welcome! I hope you enjoy it. Mine has been pretty good so far (33,000 miles and knock on wood). As for the K&N filter, opinions seem mixed. I personally like the stock set-up and will purchase another filter here soon.
Look at getting:
1. Gauges- EGT as a minimum
2. Larger exhaust
3. Diablo Predator module- I do not have one, but the folks that do seem to love it.
Do a search on these. Has been discussed a bunch. And when you do buy, support the site by purchasing from Motorhaven.
Yeah, I know there are lots of 03's running great and even the ones I test drove ran pretty well...there were other issues with the rigs. I decided that for the extra cost of an 04, it was a safer bet for me.

Spindrift
Welcome Spindrift. I actually was going to go the 350 4X4 route also then I found out it wouldn't fit in my garage without modifying the garage. As my previous 7.3L 250 worked just fine I stuck with the 250 again. Keep us posted as to your experiences with your new truck. purple
