hello from a newbi. I own a F-250 with the navistar 6.9. I purchased the truck about four yars ago with 7200 miles on the speedo. The truck was super clean and a mechanic I had check it out thought it was the correct mileage. The truck now has 84000 miles on it. Heers the rub- about 2000 miles ago the radiator cap blew off and barfed oil and coolant all over the engin compartment. I removed the oil cooler and had it rebuilt and pressur checked. Flushed the rad. and reinstalled the cooler....500 miles later the upper radiator hose blew with the same vomit all over the engin compartment. removed the oilcooler again and had 4 different diesel shops test it for leaks(local IH shop included)Tests good. Reinstall........same problem.
Any clue?
Thanks for the reply. How could it be a head gasket? The oil pressure in the head is very low ( comes up through the push rods and lubes the valve train and then gravity feeds back to the crankcase. The water is at moderate pressure as it passes through the head. If it were a head gasket, I assume there wolud be water in the oil. This is not the case. I only get oil in the water.
It sure can be a headgasket problem, maybe worse as I tore into a 7.3 n/a today w/ the exact problem. I cranked the truck up to see if the was pressure getting into the cooling system. Just cranking it over(not starting it) it built 5psi in the cooling system. Just to check further, i removed the glow plugs and pressure tested the cooling system again found #2 and #3 cylinders leaking. Again there was not water in the oil, only oil in the water. The engine i am working on has almost 200,000 miles on it and the company will probably put a reman engine from Franklin in it. In your case find out which cylinder(s) Have head checked and thoroughly inspect block when the head is removed. Hope this helps a little. Jamie
It is possible there was/is still more oil in the system. We had the problem with the oil cooler going bad too. And when we put it together we flushed it with landary soap running the engine at idel working the soap around. Then to get the soap out we opened the drain up and just held the garden hose in constantly filling untill the soap flushed out, then drained it. There were still a little bit in the system but not much for concern.
I'm sure some others would advise against the use of soap. But thats what we did.
Sorry to ask a dumb question , but here it goes. On my F350, I know where the inner-cooler (hope I got that right) and what I think to be the power steering cooler are located. I think the power steering cooler is the little one behind and a bit lower than the license plate. Not sure where the cooler for the transmission is located. But that is not my question. (If you'd like to reply to this one, feel free!)
My question is.... where is the oil cooler? I think I read somewhere it is on the side of the PSD? I can't seem to find it. Ford says to keep it clean. Do you guys know where it is?
