engine codes scanner

I remember seeing somewhere that you can pull the codes without a scanner.
Can someone steer me in the right direction.

If your Ranger is a '95 or older, then you can pull codes yourself from the EEC-IV system.

Forgot to mention I have a 1989 2.9 automatic. Can I pull the codes without a scanner or do I need one?
