engine clicking

87 2.9 4WD need some help. i know this could be a number of things but I have a clicking sound which sounds like it is coming from one of the spark plugs. any ideas?

Try running it in the dark and watch for sparks.

lifters

the ticking might be from the lifters, you reeally cant fix it that easy though. i have the same ticking in my 86 bii

what does it mean if I see sparks?

You may have bad plug wire(s) or the insulator on the plug(s) is cracked..

Also make sure the plugs are the right ones,wrong sizes can hit the pistons if they are too long.

turn off the lights and look for a spark jumping from the wires to any metal on the truck. valve covers, engine lift brackets, etc. make sure your plugs are tight. if its your lifters than you will have to pull your heads to get to them. try some marvel mystery oil. sometimes it helps. also how is your oil pressure??
