Slight knock

I bought a 91 F-150 recently and the trans is now going out, which is no biggie my buddy is going to rebuild it for me, my question is in reguards to a slight engine knock at startup which goes away once the engine is warm. Being as the trans will already be out, can the crank be pulled with the engine still in the truck? My other thought was to just replace the bearings and the oil pump without turning the crank and call it a day. The engine runs well and has good compression. I don't have an oil pressure problem but figure a high volume pump never hurts. Any opinions or advice is appreciated. The engine has 124000 miles on it and I have 10w30 in it

i think that knock is just minor. i have a small one at start up. i think its due to the fact that not enough oil gets up to the top when started. i think its comin in all 300's

I had a slight knock from my 300 at startup, especially after setting overnight. On some advice from the Oils & Lubrication forum, I removed a Fram filter and installed a MotorCraft filter. The startup knock problem went away. If you are using a Fram filter, it might be worthwhile just to spin on a MotorCraft, NAPA, or WIX filter.

I already have the motorcraft filter on it.

I guess my question is will replacing just the bearings help a knock? I am only bothering with it because I will be half way there due to the trans replacement. Just looking to add a little insurance to get her to 350,000.

That’s kinda a hard question to answer from way over here in Virginia. I would probably go with a complete re-build. Of course, new bearings could only be a good thing. But it would be a shame to do all of that work just to put it all back together to find that the knock was still there. Maybe some of the more experienced forum users can help you determine if its bearings or something else like piston slap or wrist pins.

Good Luck
