Basically my whole life is hunting..HAHA..i am going on a bear hunt in June....21rst-27th..i cannot wait. i baged a 10 pointer w/ my bow this past season and the bow is my weapon of choice i shoot tournament i just love the bow.
I go deer hunting every year. I shoot a .303 bolt action thats unbelievably acurate for how old the gun is. I go bow hunting too with a Browning bow. I have not got anything with the bow, but I have had a bunch come real close, only I couldn't get a good shot. Also, I go grouse hunting with a Remington 3 1/2" mag 12 gauge.
I live for hunting Whitetail deer, and man do I envy you guys in PA and the other states that are seeing, little own shooting,10pt and better bucks. The way things are going here in Michigan, and the way the gov is slaughtering our deer herd,I dont think we will be seeing many large bucks anymore.I start scouting in August, start bowhunting with my Oregon bow on OCT1st,put the bow down and pick up either my winchester 30.30 or .06 for rifle, the the old hawkins for muzzleloader, then back to bow till the end of season.Been doing this for thirty years.HAPPINESS IS FEEDING YOUR FAMILY WITH VENISON!
I work so I can support my hunting addicition. I hunt deer in every legal season in Wisconsin and spend a week every year with the gun in Minnesota. Even though part of my living comes from raising beef I eat far more vennision each year than beef.
I use the bow seasons mainly as scouting trips and take the occasional doe for meat. I would however shoot a big deer if the shot arose but although I see them during the bow season I usualy dont ever get that perfect shot that I am looking for. I usualy end up taking at least 3 does with the bow and one or two more with the rifle.
It is the 9 day gun season that I live for though. I try only shoot bucks that are 4 1/2 years or older and the rest of the guys that I hunt with and the people that own the land around our hunting area all have the same management plan. This has resulted in a better buck to doe ratio and many wall hangers in the last 5 years. All of this without the heavy feeding that many people assoiate with QDM. (We do however use feed plots extencivly and have quite a few ag feilds in the area.)
I also go mule deer hunting ever other year in montana and kill as many yotes as I can in the off seasons.
As for the tools of the trade I have 4 30-06's, a 300wsm, 25-06, 7mm-08, and a 22-250 that see use almost every year depending on where I am hunting and what the condidtions are. I also have a 50 cal hawken replicia that sees action in the black powder season if I havent filled my buck tag yet.
The gun I use the most is a Browning A-bolt composite stalker chambered for 30-06 that is light has a reworked trigger and shoots amazingly accurate.
To say I love deer hunting would be like saying a top fuel dragset is quick!
The only reason I work is so that I can afford to hunt. My year revolves around deer season. Stainless Ruger M77, in .308 with custom trigger, for stand use. Deerfield Carbine (44 mag) with red dot for drives. Set up a lodge the first week of bow season every year, and use a Bear Whitetail II. Then I use a 50 cal Hawkins for muzzle loading season.
Probably my favorite hunting is for squirrels. Customized a Ruger 10-22 for that. Lightened trigger, floated barrel, double pillar-bedded, bolt damped, easy one-hand bolt release - but the thing that made the biggest difference in accuracy was head space adjustment. This little shooter, still with factory barrel, shoots a nickel-sized group at fifty yards with a $8.80 brick of Remington ammo from Walmart.
Recently started spring turkey hunting. Bull frogs come in season in July, rabbits and quail are getting scarce.
A long time ago I made myself a rule, which I still follow - I only shoot what I'm going to eat. I just watch the other critters while I'm waiting for some food to walk by.
Hunt for whitetails mainly, but it seems to get harder to find them each year. Did not get to fire a shot this year. Did find a good buy on a new rifle though. Browning .270 automatic Safari grade. Maybe next year.
whitetail deer- Winchester 30-30 or Remington Model 700 30-06 in rifle season, New England breakover .50 caliber muzzleloader in muzzleloader season, PSE Team Fitzgerald compound bow with 45 lb. draw weight (I'm only 14) in bow season
squirrels-New England breakover single shot 12 gauge shot gun (same gun as muzzleloader except different barrel)
