I have a friend with a 96 stroke. It is an f250 with the automatic. We live in Illinois and lately he has left it out at night since it's only getting down to around 40 or so. Sometimes when he goes to start it, after letting the glowplugs cycle he can crank on it for several seconds with no fire. He will let the glowplugs cycle again and it will eventually start, but it runs as though it has lost its prime and is trying to get rid of the air. He says it doesn't do it everytime, but it concerns him, and it's a little embarassing to crank on it that much. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
Have him plug the truck in for a few hours prior to starting. If it starts better, that will be indication the glow plug system is at fault. Could be: glow plug controller, wiring from controller to valve cover, valve cover wiring, glow plugs . Hope this helps.
Just replaced the glow plug relay on my 2000 for the same symptoms. Hard starting with cooler temps, slowly got worse. I checked with a volt meter. Had 12v in the main, power to trigger the relay, but no power out. As I was removing it, found out the nut holding the power in lead was siezed to the stud, broke the plastic cover. Copper disc inside relay was indeed toast. Replaced it, starts like a new truck. Best I could find in my area was NAPA, $78!!!ouch!!!
for any of the parts that are not "hung" in the truck go to international. i have found that they are about $20 to $100 cheaper. i had the same problem went to international and bought a glow plug relay switch and it only ran 50.00 plus tax
