i'm looking for advice on the best way to remove the fan/clutch from the water pump there is a 1 5/8" nut that screws onto the water pump i can't seem to find the way to loosen that. 94 f150 w inline 6. any advice is appreciated.
There is a special wrench set that needs to be used. One wrench holds the nut, the other goes against the 4 water pump pulley mounting bolts. Most auto parts stores will have it. That nut can be very tight!!!! Clean the thermostat in your fan clutch assy. also. The dirt keeps the bi-mettallic coil from operating correctly
Yikes! You may want to check your water pump bearings now, and, Yes, I'm serious!
I'm new here, but I sold parts at NAPA for almost ten years. If you went there and they didn't know about the special tool, you got one of the bad ones (counter guys). There is indeed a special tool made for this application, and without it you run the risk of damaging your water pump. Believe me. This is one of those- "If I had a dime for every bad 300-6 water pump I've seen..." things.
special tool indeed ,made one in half hour of 1/8 in steel and hacksaw and file.
tool fits outside width of 4 bolts in water pump pulley and has square hole for
1/2 in drive flex bar about 4 in from cutout for 4 bolts. looks like a 2 pronged
pitch fork. save yourself some money and make your own.
You can rent the tool from AutoZone..it costs you at first but when you return it you get your money back. Make sure you specify the year of your motor because I've got a '94 and AutoZone guys gave me the tool set for something like '87-'91, well it didn't fit around the 4 bolts that hold on the fan, so I fired up the grinding wheel and made it fit!
AutoZone doesn't know....hehe. It's amazing what alittle bit of black spray paint can do! Made it look brand new since the tool was black to begin with.
