I've read all the GOOD posts on ATF changes and some of you recommended taking it in and having it done! Do you recommend the Ford dealership or one of the local quick lube shops. I have an early 2001 F-250 PSD with 31,000 miles on it. I normally do my own maintenance, like the 4 gal oil chg, fuel filter, etc. Or if I have someone do it I like to be close at hand and watch what they are doing, that's a no-no at Ford!
If I do it myself and use the MERCON, what brand can I use and feel safe with. At Walmart it's about $2.50 a qt. and if I go to Ford and get their brand it will be probably close to $5 a qt.
Personally, I don't think it probably needs it yet, but if you read the maintenance manual it seems to recommend it! It smells OK and still seems to be slick to the touch. Thanks for your comments on the brand of ATF!
I purchase a 5 gallon pail of Amaile Mercon ATF from the local parts jobber for just under $30. Granted I change my ATF at least twice a year, once before plowing season and again at the end of the plowing season. Really cheap insurance in my opinion. This is on a 2001 F-250 V10 that just turned 20K miles.
Thanks for the reply! I noticed on several of the posts that I viewed that they mentioned additives. Is there anything that one should or should NOT use as it relates to ATF additive?
