I'm looking into convirting from my 400 (NO M) to a late model diesel on my 77 f-250 crewcab. I would be very interested in any info. that anyone may have.
Go to fordcummins.com. I think people use the dodge motors because of some clearance problems with other engines. Also the 5.9 cummins is a beast of a motor. Also go to the second page and there is a thread called "diesel eng" Also the 3rd page of the engine swap forum "5.9L cummins in 78" You should also try a search, but the search feature is been kinda wierd lately.
i have a 99 7.3 powerstroke in my 76 crewcab 4x4 long bed. yes, i extended the frame in two places to get it all to fit(the long box 8ft). i ran the ford 5 speed from a the same two wheel drive truck i got the motor from. i kept the divorced np 205 and just had a new itermediate shaft made. i love it. its fast, get 18 mpg. and turns lots of heads. because we all know that old fords are even better with a little new technology. i ran a strait 5 inch exhaust, no muffler, no cat. took about about 5 seconds to get used too, it sounds bad A*$. i have had the truck on the road for a almost 2 years and 55,000 thousand miles with no problems. i used a hiboy frame and parts of the old two wheel drive crewcab frame to make it longer. i also had to lengthen the rear driveshaft. the cool thing is that it is longer than a 4 door longbox superduty by almost 6 inches. and impossible to park, and i wouldn't trade it for anything
