From what ive noticed on here the easiest engine to get in our trucks would be a 5.9 cummins, i have read of guys puttin 6.9's in them but everything has to be redone differently up front. Ive also seen pics of a 6 cylnder perkins in a 79 one ton.
Believe it or not, Ford did offer a diesel option in '73-'76 F250/350's. It was a Detroit 3-53 non turbo charged engine. The engine code on it was "K". It was available as a DSO. (Domestic Special Order). It must've been a dog--- only 159 cu.in., and I believe the 53 series Detroits red-lined at about 3200 rpm.
Detroit 3-53(3 cylinder, 53 ci per cyl) cool! I just rebuilt one at school. It was a N code engine and they use a small blower(only 1-3psi of boost) because they are 2 stroke. Set up with advanced timing it has great throttle response. They are rated at around 100-150 hp at high idle(2200rpm) but would make alot of torque. Twin turbo setups were available and would triple hp output but reduce the life of the engine. I'd sure like to see one setup in a truck. If i was going to do it, a 5.9 cummins is probably your best bet. I think any kind of diesel is cool. Good luck.
I dont know when they started making them, but alot of people seem to use a motor from the mid 90's on up. I guess you would just use whatever year motor you could get. Good luck if you decide to do the conversion
Depending on what kind of setup you want, just about any cummins b-series 5.9 should work. If you want to purchase an adaptor for your stock tranny it might have to be a specific bell housing. I would look for a wrecked dodge and get the entire engine and trans(possible t case) and just mount it all into your truck. I hear the mid 90s 12 valve 5.9's are about the best and strongest ever made. The newer ones are the 24 valve and make more power but have more problems supposidly(more $$ too). If you wanted power, i hear BD Power (www.BD-power.com) is comming out with a twin turbo setup that makes over 400 hp and 1200 lb/ft or torque. That'd be something. Good luck.
yes seen it done and have drove it a 77.5 (non highboy) the guy put a 6.9 in place of a 400m 4 speed talk about a pulling truck I have also seen a perkins in a 78 chevy 4x4
One of my project trucks (there are three) is a '78 short wheelbase 2WD chassis that I have an Isuzu 4BB1 diesel installed in. The chassis is fully restored. The engine is mated to a BW T-5 trans. The rear is 9" with 370 gears. That's as far as I got with it. Someone on this forum once said " So many projects-so little time). In my case, it would be so many projects-so little money.
If the Pickup has Factory AC I would try to Find a Cummins from a, Oh Say 95 Ford Truck. They have a Low Mount Turbo. I used a 93 Cummins from a DoDge and Had to Modifiy The AC box To get enough Clearance. I didnt know about the Low Mount Turbos at the time. You could just try to Come up with the Low Mount Manifold and Then There should be Enough Room for the AC. I am Getting ready to make My F150 into an F350 and Will Either Do another Cummins or a 94 7.3 IDI The 94 Seems to Have lots more Power then the 93.
Probably the best 6bta is the 215 hp models from '96(?)-98.5 Dodges. Any P7100 (inline) injection pump engine can be bombed to get a lot more hp. The '89-91.5's are non intercooled rotory pump and make 160hp. 91.5-93 are intercooled rotory. '94 goes to inline 160 or 175 hp.
I have seen where people turn the exhaust manifold upside down and get the turbo high enough to clear the hvac box. I am using a non a/c cab and will run aftermarket hvac setup. And the 4" exhaust fits.
