anybody else had this happen. i replaced my alternator last jan. this week it started whining (more than me) . i drove to autozone, they tested it, was ok, just noisey. yesterday i took it off and got a replacement fr om autozone (lifetime warrenty) they bench tested it and said the shaft was bent..? they asked me if i had been in an accident with the van, or droped it on install. ??which i had not. it had worked flawlessly for a year, in fact it was working when i removed it. but i had never heard of the shaft being bent. what could cause that? tight serpintine belt? drag in the system (other pulleys going bad?).......any thoughts? rick
maybe you bent the shaft while removing the alt. I have been known to use a prybar on the alt. pully to loosen the belt tension. maybe that happened...
new one is doing great! new belt went on easier? wonder if they sold me the wrong size last year. i had a heck of a time getting it on last year...go figure. thanks guys rick
Sometimes new replacement non-OEM parts come with a slightly bigger pulley. Happened to me when my A/C compressor broke down. The replacement from Factory Air has a bigger pulley, so I ended up buying the same kind of belt (K-6 I believe) but an inch longer. For the last 7 years, every time I changed the belt, I had to remember that.
