Forgive me but this info is second had since I can't get it to act up myself.
My son's 98 ranger 4cyl auto will act like it completely drops out of gear when coasting after a 10-15mile interstate drive. It will rev up and the truck speed will continue to drop off to a point and then it will catch and drive fine from then on. It has only done this a hand full of times and is extremely intermitant.
The fluid and filter was changed 6-8 months ago with 10000miles maybe on the new fluid.
Any ideas sure would help.
Is it like shifting into neutrel, then when RPM's come down it catches into gear?my truck did this and it turned out to be the throttle possition sensor,on the throttle body.Have auto-zone pull the check engine codes for any pending ones. The check engine light doesnt have to be on for it to have a pending or intermediat code.I bet you get a code PO222 or PO223,these are most common, but there are others that can indicate a bad TPS.
I'd still check for codes, you see, the TPS tells the computor when to shift the transmission,if it doesnt get a signal it will shift when it gets proper vaccum.you get highest vaccum at idle.I really didnt understand this, but after replacing my TPS my truck hasnt missed a shift yet. Before it would act like it hit neutral when you tried to accelerate hard(like geting on the freeway).
