Ok so im going camping this weekend.. and i need my 4x4.. but my axle is busted.. SO, Heres what happened.. I went to a Truck Dismantling place to look for an axle shaft, and he went into the books to find out which one it is. Now i have a 79 F-150 and he came back and said well, which production date is yours because theres 2 dif. kinds.. theres an axle shaft for 73-79 Trucks, and one for specifically 78-79.. I dont know what hes smoking.. but will both of them work? I wanna buy it today and get it fixed!
Who knows what numbers he is looking at but my first choice would be to buy the axle for '78-'79. Thats your best bet. You could remove your axle and take it with you to make sure they match up...
Yep, take your axle with you along with any numbers you have off the axle. With these old trucks it is difficult to know what is in them sometimes. Many of them have had parts swapped and modified many times.
I think you're going to find the difference is in the bearing style. My 77' 9" uses sealed bearings (dunno if thats the OEM setup for this year). I recently picked up another 9" from a 78' Bronco which had tapered roller bearings that are lubed with gear oil. You can swap one style of bearing for the other with the same axle.
