I have a 1979 f150 4x4 highboy svo and when I was backing out of the driveway the steering made a snapping noise and the tires locked in one direction.
I found a loose bolt under the driverside front tire but I have read that the steering shafts in these trucks will get bad after a while and they get loose and pull all over the road.
I haven't taken it appart yet to look at the problem I was just wondering if I should replace the steering shaft anyway and how hard would that be?
Hate to tell you it bro but your truck is neither a SVO or a highboy. If the tires are both pointing in the same direction and the steering wheel is locked then I would suggest jacking it up and following all of the steering components until you find the point that is binding. As for the question of whether or not to replace the steering component even if it not bad, the answer is up to you but if I were to get a vehicle that old used, then I would probably rebuild all of the vital things like brakes and steering components just for safety sake. Since no one else here can jack your truck up or crawl under it and see what is messed up, I first suggest you try that yourself or take it to someone who does not how to do it.
