Hey Guy's I have 98 explorer and i need to replace the gas charged hood struts has any one out there replaced a set???? The Inst.sheet that came with the struts are no real help!!Is this a one man job???Any help would be great!!!!!
It took me about 15 min. to change both. You will need a small tip flat screw driver to pry out a metal c-clip at the end of the strut. Once the clip is remove, you can just wiggle the strut out of the ball joint. Good luck.
I think they're held on clips. Unclip them and pull it out. Or do what I do, use a stick. That way, I know for sure that thing won't close down on me and give me a big bruise.
Have you attached an aftermarket bug defector to your hood? The added weight of the bug deflector may be too much for the struts to support. It was on my 98 Explorer, now I just use a stick.
I changed all 6 of mine about 3 weeks ago. All 6 costs me a $100. I had them all changed in less than 30 minutes.
They are held on by clips as ptd said. Flathead screwdriver is all you need, except on the rear glass ones. Pliers there to pull the pin out. The replacements usually just snap into place. Put a little force on it, and the ball pin will snap into place...
Was just curious about how my 98 Explorer original hood lift supports would work without my bug deflector attached to the hood. So I removed the bug deflector and found that the lift supports were pretty lame. So I am going to replace the lift supports and hopefully they will work better to hold up the hood even with the bug deflector attached. You would think that these lift supports would last longer since they are not really used until you open the hood. But I guess time takes a toll. Of course, judging from how much some here like to tinker under the hood, myself included, the lifts may get more use than expected-LOL
