OK I've seen a lot of discussion about a 10K mod and would like to know
what exactly it is, how or why does it work (seen comments of 20-30 hp and up gains) also how to install. Sort of new to all this mod stuff on diesels.
guess I'm a virgin or mod-dummy....
78fordman - Thanks, couldn't get any better instructions than that. I'm putting a chip on my truck so I guess theres no since in doing the mod. According to the instructions it says if the truck is chipped then it will have little or no gain since the chip is already fooling the system, is that right?
I was thinking sitting around thinking about some mods for the X and then something a thought hit me. With the power increase that the 10k mod gives you, would an exhuast system be needed to compensate?

Looks like I wasn't thinking much when I wrote this! . I meant to say, "sitting around thinking" and "and then a thought hit me."
The 10k helps the off idle performance (bottom end) the most. It also helps with turbo spool up which also helps the bottom end. I would say that 30 h/p and 100 ft.lb. is VERY optimistic even a little exagerated. I will pull my 10k out and see if my chip does the same thing. I just left the 10k in after the chip and kinda forgot about it.

I'll agree with that the 30hp and 100ft-lb is a little optimistic. I won't argue that it adds hp and torque, but I don't think quite that much. I just installed my 10K mod this weekend and am happy with the improvement, can notice more power. Biggest thing is that it really improved my fuel mileage, probably by 5+ mpg. Well worth my $0.20. One thing for those that do it, don't hammer down on it real hard for too long, meaning having the pedal too the floor till you get up to 70mph for a couple of times. I did that and it started smoking real bad and defueling, lost all my power. Scared me for a while, thought I blew something, but I remembered reading about the defueling mechanism of the engine. Shut it down and restarted it and ran fine thankfully.
Just installed mine tonight(and 2 others for my friends), I love it. When you say not to hammer it till 70 very much or you will defuel and then you had to restart it. If I have it on a switch can I shut it off for a while then turn it back on and will it be normal? We did the 5.6k if it makes any difference. Thanks

I've got mine on a switch, but turning it off and back on didn't work for me, I had to shut the truck off and restart it. But I read in another post that a guy had a similar problem, shut his mod off and drove around till it got back to normal. I wouldn't recommend trying to find out if it'll happen to you, it's not a good feeling when you loose all your power.
Red Diesel, yes your stock exhaust will be OK, especially since you have a 2001. The SD series had a much better down pipe design then the 94-97's. But the 94-97's have a lot better muffler design, go figure. BTW my comment about the 30 h/p, 100 ft. lb. was not aimed toward you but rather at the figures. I have seen people on other forums state the same figures too, and they are just not true to life. I dynoed my truck as a baseline before any serious mods, and it was 205/427 with only a 10k, shimmed fpr, regulated MAP line, Tymar, and a DP. So thats why I do not feel the 30/100 are accurate. Because I was at 30+ h/p over what my truck was expected to do stock, with all those "little" mods collectively.
With my MAP line regulated I never see any defuleing, and with my current mods I can see 32-33# of boost.
