This is out of the 1974 owners manual. There was not a 400 engine in that year but I will list the info for the 390- it should be close. It shows that the standard axle for your truck was the 4.10. The max trailer weight for your rig is 7,000 lbs with the trailer towing package or camper special. Otherwise the max trailer weight is 5,000 lbs. I have several of the 1974's and just limit them to 5,000 regardless of engine, transmission, etc. They all handle it quite good but anymore and the tow quality suffers quickly. I would suggest a good set of brakes on the trailer and a good controller. I use the old Kelsey- Hayes and it has been great. Also, listed is the rating for a 5er, that is 5,000 lbs-period.
Maximum tongue weight is 15% of trailer weight. They also recommend using the 9.50X 16.5 wheels and tires. Hope this helps.
I take it by your sig that your looking for the specs on a 78. The 74 info is a starting point but more than likely they are figuring using manual 4 wheel drum brakes. Which axles are you running?
Not sure it is a four wheel drive truck. By the way do you have any idea where to find reproduction interior parts for this truck. Items specific to Lariat?
