1. I am about to purchase an overdrive transmission for the truck. A T-86 is the correct transmission, right? I just need a confirmation on this before I close the deal.
2. Also, my vehicle ID plate says I have axle "1". What is the ratio of the rear end?
axle is 3:70 open diff 9in ford. The transmission I'm pretty sure(I'll check my books in the morning) is correct. Make sure you have the one for the six cylinder. Drive shaft will need to be shortned because of the overdrive tailshaft. A local shop should be able to handle that. -4speed
The thing is, I would like to keep the original driveshaft in case I need to switch back to the original transmission. How much would a used driveshaft cost?
Also, what would be the difference between the transmission for the 6-cyl. and the one for the 8-cyl.?
That's what I thought. If I buy the overdrive I'll be using the same bellhousing.
I talked to my dad about the axle ratio and he says that if it's really 3.70, we don't really need the overdrive for decent highway speeds. What do you guys have to say about this?
It's not a good gear for keeping pace on the highway(you'll be 45-55) if it's a long trip. The overdrive and 3:70's make a dandy 60-65mph cruiser and the engine isn't working that hard. I'd recommend it. A used driveshaft shouldn't cost much so look around. -4speed
True 3.70 is not a good gear for cruzing but it will do 80, 60 is just rite depending on the size of your tires. 65 is about 3000 rpm. Before the speed limit went up it was just rite. I have a 3.70 in my truck soon to be a 3.25 something. I do travel with it that way. If you have a 6 cylinder you may want leave the 3.70. If you can get your hands on a over drive and make it work it would be a very nice cruzer.
Yeah, we've decided to buy the overdrive tranny. We won't install it right away since we've got more important things to worry about, but it'll be a nice thing to have handy.
