I have built the 351m in my 79 f-150. It is now a 410 with a 4 barrel carb, intake among other things such as a 268H comp cam. It is dualed out w/ some fairly long old glasspacks, about 24" or so I would guess, which I am planning on replacing with 18" glasspacks or the Dynomax Bullet race muffler. I want to put headers on it. I have looked @ the dynomax standard series headers. They have 2 listed for my pickup. One is 1 5/8" and the other is 1 3/4". What are the pros & cons of each? Does the size difference matter? Also how would the purple hornie header mufflers sound compared to a 18" glasspack? I assume it would be quieter is this right? Any help or opinions would be appreciated.
I just tried putting the dynomax ceramics on my 79 F150 4x4 and ran into problems. The passenger side header rubbed the frame, and the drivers side sits only 1/8" from my front driveshaft. I have a set of hedmans on their way to try next.
they'll be here thursday..I hope they fit nicely! I did talk to Hedmans support about the coating on the Elite series of headers. You can also get their regular line in a ceramic coat, but the price is higher than the Elites with ceramic coat. The coating on the elites is thicker, but dull gray in color. The regular ones when coated have a polished coating, shiny but thinner.
They got here today. First impressions, they are impressive! They weigh alot more than the dynomax's, due to their thicker tubes and heavier flanges. The instructions are better than what dynomax provided. The hedmans also come with the materials to hook up the air cleaner stove pipe, and to connect to the Y pipe if you have one. Impressive. I am missing the collector gaskets, have to call Hedman in the morning about that. They have the CARB sticker for emissions. Holding them next to the Dynomax's, they look like they should fit better. I'll get them on soon! FYI these are model 89218, Hedman Elites for the 79F150 351m/400 4x4.
Got them on it today. I called Hedman, they don't use collector gaskets anymore as they now form the collector with a ball end. Very cool! They do come with reducers, all the bolts, the stove pipe connection, and adapters for a Y pipe. Hedman loses a point for throwing in cheap paper header gaskets, I went and bought some fel-pro metal core ones to use instead. The Hedmans were a bit trickier to install than the dynomax's, I had to lift the engine, and drop the front driveshaft to get the drivers side one in. But they fit so much better than the Dynomax's! Thicker flanges do not bend when tightening them down. Clearance around the frame is much better, and the driver side one tucks close to the block and comes out on the passenger side of the front driveshaft, which gives it alot of clearance there and will make it easier to hook the exhaust to(both pipes running to the passenger side). I'll get some pics loaded into my gallery of these. I must say, for the $35 more the Hedmans cost, they are easily worth every penny.
It shouldn't have been necessary, but I could not get the steering shaft off. Since I had the lift at the ready, it was an easy way out for me. Their instructions do not indicate that it is necessary to do.
