Cleaning rusty gasket surfaces

Ran into a small problem the other day. I hadn't been out to the hangar in a while and when I got there I realzed a small film of rust had formed on the gasket surfaces. What do I need to do to get these surfaces cleaned up and preped for gaskets? I've thought about using emery cloth, but don't if there is a better way.

I appreciated any advice.

Steel wool soaked with WD-40.

A hand sander with 400 grit paper.

Yeah what he said, also scotchbrite and carbcleaner, partscleaner, ect. Make sure it is OIL free before you install gasket............

I would use my die grinder with a wire wheel. If you have the air compressor, a die grinder fairly inexpesnive.

3M makes Scotchbite pads for die grinders that makes this job a breeze. They scream thru the rust and leave the metal alone.

I've always used a wire wheel on my drill and it's worked great but I'm going to keep an eye out for the Scotchbrite pads for grinders. I think that's a great idea!

I have used the green Scotch Brite pads as well with excellent results.

But I will check out my local Wal-Mart for the ones that are mentioned by F350bronco.
