I have a 01 ps with 91,000 which is new to me. My question is I notice a clatter much like noisy rockers even after the motor is warmed up mostly under load and wonder if this is normal PS diesel noise. I heard once about a term called "Chatter" refering to a insufficent fuel supply problem to the number 8 cylinder due to a design flaw.
I dont see much on the topic but read it is inherant to the PS and there are shops that can retrofit the fuel system with larger lines to supply more fuel and thus eliminate the chatter. I read Fords fix is a "reverse injector" but this deminishes the out put of that cylinder. Anyone familiar with this issue, or recognize my noise as normal?

First of all that clatter is common with the Powerstroke. Nothing to worry about. I still hear new "noises" with mine. Second, the fix you are referring to was that Ford installed a long lead injector in the number 8 cylinder to address fuel supply issues....mainly a symptom called "cackle" a much argued topic of air entering the injection process. However the by product was a condition called "idle knock". Search the threads for more info on this subject and fixes. And lastly, your injectors can only handle a certain amount of fuel delivery. Larger lines will probably not help deliver more fuel to the injectors by themselves. You need to tell the pump and injector pressure control module to squirt more fuel. Sooooo, just adding larger fuel lines is not going to much at all. However, your questions are good ones and fortunately there are many sharp diesel people on this forum who can help with your questions. Search the threads for answers to your questions.
Mine makes a noise at light throttle that sounds like valve tappets rattling, coming and going in pulses, and especially if I am turning a curve or corner at light throttle. Little annoying, but I just ignore it, as the engine seems to be running just fine. I was told years ago to just close your ears to a diesel's noises, or it would drive you batty.
