Restoration help

Any body know how to make the galvinized fender supports look new again??? I am talking about the pannels under the hood that holds the battery support and windshield wiper fluit tank. I dont want to paint them. mabey some kind of acid treatment?

hmm, well, the paint is probably gone in some areas due to the battery being there corroding it. why don't you want to paint it?just get a wire wheel and a can of brush on por15. its no big deal

I had really good luck with a green scrubbie pad and some simple green/ Casrtol Super Clean and plenty of elbow grease.

You could use some zinc rich paint???

Moved to bodywork forum where the restoration wizards are.

Merged Thread because of double posting

i asked this question a few weeks ago and didnt get a reply. i am restoring my 79 f 150 4x4. i was wondering whats the best way to make the galvanised pannels under the hood look new again? i am talking about the ones that hold the battery tray and wipper fluid tank. an y ideas thanks rick

I would say that sandblasting them would be the easiest way.

I say sandblast. I don't like acid washes because before you paint you must make sure you've removed ALL of it which never happens.

i started wet sanding first. it looks great but a lot of work. i am going to try to keep from painting them if i can. rick

I have just done the same thing I took them out, wire wheeled them sanded with a 6" electric orbital sander with 60 grit disk's.Then I painted them with Rust Coat(ALKYD)Flat black paint,spray bomb.Wow what a difference.
