first truck, steering problems

Hi,new to the site.Picking up my first truck Sat.,79 150 ranger.I can't wait I have always wanted one of these most peaple tell me I'm crazy but thats ok.The main and first problem that I have to fix is the steering. The wheel is very sloppy have to hold it totally side ways to go straight, and when you go to make a corner it goes somthing like this........turn,turn,turn ok she grabbed, now don't over steer, becarefull when ya bring her back!!Thats pretty much how it was on the test drive. The seller tells me that I just need new tie rod ends? But I do not know that much about it,So what do you guys think? From reading someother post I'v found here ,I think there maybe more to it then just that......thx

Well, couple things to check. Get into the cab, and see the the steering box pitman arm moves responsivly to the input shaft movement. If it doesn't, there is an adjustment on those steering boxes. There is a bolt sticking up, and loosen the jam nut and tighen until it is tight, and back off a 1/4 turn. Make sure your wheels are straight when doing this. If the steering box is responive, then you tie rods are shot. I am getting new Moog steering parts for my 78, came to 251 dollars, but i will have tight steering.
