i have a 1975 f-250 with a 360, a NP435 and a NP205. the problem im having is i just ordered and recived some but not all of a compleatly new dual side exit exhaust system. has anyone routed the exhaust system around the front drive line? if i run it straight back it'll hit the transfer case. this leads me to my real question. has anyone used flexible tubing? is it easy to work with? and has anyone installed a system like mine on their truck? thanks.
Routing the exhaust on these 4x4s really only leaves you two options.
1. run from the driver side over to the pass. side before the t-case and go back from there. That's the way mine is.
2. get some fenderwell exit headers and run outside the frame rails.
I suppose you could go under the t-case and cross member, but you'll loose clearence. If you don't do any off-roading, it should be OK. I wouldn't do it myself, but it could be done.
As for flexible exhaust, I asked that a while ago, too. I think the biggest problems are rust and heat. With all the ribs in that stuff, moisture will build up and (I'm told) it'll rust out in a year or so. If you're considering running it right off the manifold, it might not last too long. I don't know what that stuff is rated at for heat, but that's the hottest section of the exhaust.
You might ask in the exhaust forum, too. That, and check with a muffler shop.
I run mine under the crossmember with two peices of flex tubing coming off the header collectors. It seems to be fine i havent had any problems with clearnece yet. The only thing is the flex tube will rot and break you just have to give it a lil time. So you would be replaceing the flex tube more than once.
i ended up just buying two lengths of flex, im going to route the pipes out and up. should fit...now i just need to get the old headers off. what a pain, already broke two bolts....sigh. thanks guys.
There are quite a few tricks for getting those bolts out. For the ones that are already broken, I like to weld a nut onto the end (if you can) and use an impact wrench on it. The heat from welding it will free it up pretty well and they come out easy.
