I just returned from a 3400 mile trip with my 99 SD Crew Cab 2x4 with a 5.4L, automatic trans. and 3.73 gears. I drove the speed limits the whole time (most states were 75 mph except for good old CA.) and used the supposed defective cruise control the entire trip. The truck was unloaded, except for me and a suitcase. The fuel mileage ranged from 15.5 to 17.1. Most tanks averaged in the mid 16's. The truck is now 6 months old and has a total of 5200 miles on it. So far....Very Pleased!!!!
Which brand tire do you have on your Crewcab?
Please also include tire size and tread info; and
any advise on options to include when ordering.
I'm considering purchasing a 4 X 2 Super Duty F250
to pull a fifth wheel RV. Thank you.
I ordered the Lariet package for my CC. By doing that you'll get almost every option available as far as interior goes. The leather is very comfortable. The Lariet pkg. also includes the upgraded aluminum wheels. I didn't get anything special as far as tires go. It came standard with General LT235-85R16 BSW mud and snow tires. They are load range E and good for 3042lbs.each if inflated to 80 psi. (If you ever put that much weight on your truck, you are going to destroy something!)
If you are going to tow a fifth wheel, you will probably want to order the long box. I've heard that the short box CC,s like mine are not the best choice because of the lack of space between the fifth wheel and cab. I believe there is a fifth wheel available fo short box CC's that will work for you if that is what you choose to order. Whatever you get, if it is a Super Duty, you'll love it!
Fuel mileage has been averaging between 16.1 and 16.4 depending on the terrain. I drive fast and I don't really care about fuel mileage. My last five hundred mile run in the hills of PA. netted me 16.1 at about 80 to 90 mph. I am set up for heavy trailering but I only pull one maybe 1% of the time. I enjoy the bulk of the truck at these speeds. The only problem I am having at this time is the carrier bearing which I think is caused by a problem with the drive shaft.
Get the v10 to tow. You can't have too much power and the v10 with the 3.90 rearend has the highest tow rating for the F250 SD. (even higher than the PS-check the ratings) My v10 automatic shortbed has been running 15.5 highway (I only have 2000 miles on it)and on a 100 mile trip while towing it ran 12 plus running 70-75 highway with several very steep grades. I was pulling a three horse gooseneck horsetrailer with living quarters and passed several cars at ease on a two lane road. I will pull a 5th wheel RV next summer with a slider hitch to handle parking. It only cost about $200 to modify my old hitch-which was offset by the cheaper shortbed.
The shortbed handles and pulls and parks better than my old longbed.
What sort of problems are you having with the carrier bearing and drive shaft?
I feel a vibration on my 250 SD CC short box 4x2 at about 52-54 mph. It is more noticeable when decelerating. I feels to me to be coming from the drive line. Maybe the angle of a u-joint to steep? Any thoughts or anyone notice the same thing?
I am about to purchase your identical truck. I wanted the V-8 mainly for the gas mileage, but I am worried about the power that it gives. Do you have any complaints about the power? I drive mostly hwyway but do some towing mainly boats and lowboys. Let me know, is the gas milage worthy of a V-10?
F250 CC SWB 5.4L 3.73 axle, auto
gbeebe, several months after I purchased my 99 SD CC 4x2 3.73 5.4L, I bought a boat. The boat and tlr weigh about 4000#. On flat ground and small hills, power was no problem. When I got into the Sierra foothills, I was always stuck in second gear. Fuel mileage dropped big time any time the boat was behind it. In reality, I think my Ranger did a better job of towing the boat. To make a long story short, as of 11-23-99, I no longer have the truck. I ordered a 2000 PSD 4X4 Lariat, and let the dealer have this one as an early trade-in.
My truck is a y2k F250 XLT SC 4x2 4.10LS 5sp a few options.
I've only had the truck a few weeks and have 1600 miles on it..
On a trip between NC and PA over the holidays with 1000lbs in the bed, I had no problems with the power.. I was always easily able to keep the truck at 55/65/70 or whatever without ever shifting out of OD, and my engine isn't even fully broke in yet.
Mileage averaged around 15.5.
I think one key is the 4.10 rear end compared to Neil's 3.73.
With the 4.10, you can keep the engine in a better RPM range for 5.4L torque/HP curve.. just my opinion.
I'm also sure that the V10 would tow a large load better than any combo of 5.4L, but I don't do that much large towing..
