Engine Identification

I have a 1977 Ford F150 Explore that I just picked up.It's Orange and needs little boddy work but I don't know what engine it has. My dad said that all sines show a 351m. But I read that a 351m is 10.6 inches across or something like that, but this is like 12.

Easy *Signs* to determine general engine.

Is there a Valve cover sticker ?
Count the valve cover bolts
What is the 4th digit in the Vin# ?

To determine between a 351M & a 400 you have to physically measure the stroke.

Engine Identification:
351C/M/400 335 series: 8 bolts in rectangular valve covers. Timing chain housing is part of block. Thermostat housing on block. Exhaust bolt holes diagonal.
351M/400 335 series: intake is 10.7" wide the 351C is narrow.
351W/302/5.0L 6 bolts on trapezoidal valve covers. Thermostat housing on intake. Exhaust bolt holes horizontal.
429/460 385 series: 7 bolts in rectangular valve cover
352/360/390/427/428 FE series: Intake goes under valve covers.
There are other indicators but these may help.

You should have a 400 .
That's slightly better than the 351M

How about I move this thread to the 351M/400 Engine forum so you hear from the people in there.
I woudn't go by that 10.7" too much.
