Well, I pull up next to this POS mid '90's chevy, with the cat back and thrush glasspack stickers. I figure, easy kill right? Well, light changes, and I cannot get ANY traction. None. Just tire spin. He just walks away, and I'm left sitting there spinning, letting off, spinning, letting off. The pavement was a little wet, and I was in the right lane, so I had most of the water, but I need more traction. Man was I mad!!!
Anyway, any cheap suggestions? I havent got the $400 for a locker yet.
Yeah, you're probably right. I shouldn't have even thought about it on wet roads anyway.
I really like the looks of that lock right unit. Right in my price range. I'll probably do that before anything to my engine. As it is now, I can pretty much spin the tire (not tires) at will, so I know the engine has the power. I just need to put it to the ground. After that, THEN comes the 390.
I've got a 352 with performer intake, edel 600cfm 4bbl, pertronix, duals, and 3 speed. I'm running toyo proxes S/T in the rear 275/60R15(app $100 each) and with the bed on(It's currently off for painting) I'm hard pressed to spin the tires(open diff, 3.5 gears) off the line straight up. I know it's no fire-breathing 390 but I'm convinced that a good set of grippy directional tires makes a world of diference in traction. just my 2 cents.
Ford67ranger, you may be right. I've got some tires in the back yard I have to get mounted for summer.
It just occured to me, if I got that Lock-Right locker, would I have to use limited-slip additive in the differential (Ford 9" of course)? Also, what weight oil should I use? I have some 80w90, would that work?
Cool. That's what I was looking for. I might get one after I sell some FE stuff that's just sitting in my garage. College students got to make money somehow, ya know?
Not sure if you'll like the lock-right. And, not sure if it's warranty'd in a full size truck application.
Friend put a lock-rite in his CJ7 and has stoped useing it as a daily driver. It would lock and unlock at the most inoppertune times making the rig want to swap lanes on the freeway. Seem'd real bad pulling out onto the street as well, as it would lock up before the rig was straight and make it want to push, making for steering corrections all thru the turn... looked like a PITA to drive from the passeners seat.
Dunno, maybe in a heavier, longer wheelbase vehicle it's not an issue.
However, when looking for a locker for my XJ, 2 different diff. shops wanted to make sure the locker was not being put in a full sized vehicle. Said they don't last.
Maybe something worth looking into?
FWIW, a stock traction lock with the friction clutches order altered will provide all the street traction you could ever want. That's all I run in my Mustang. 6000rpm clutch dumps at the track, car goes straight as an arrow(equal traction to both wheels). On the street, if I punch it, the back steps out a little and I can watch 2 nice black lines follow me up the street.
No clicking, snapping, banging... easy on tires around town...
I would stick with a limited slip for a street vehicle.
Detroit True Track is very nice... but $$$.
