weak roofs

hey everyone, I have an 84 bronco 2. My buddy and I were thinking about cutting the back off and putting in rollbars, but now the more I think abou it the less I want to do it because of mud and everything else being able to come right in. My friend said we should put the bars in anyways because he read somewhere that the bronco 2's have a weak roof and really crumple when rolled over. Please let me know what you know from experience or whatever, thanks

It depends on how hard your gonna push your self 4x4ing. It takes alot to roll a bronco 2 i have been in ditches, taken jumps, had only one wheel on the ground and the back tires like 4 feet off the ground, but still the closest time i came to rolling it was when i went down a steep hill and my back tires came off. I would have rolled end over end.

so you go mudin or climbing with your bronco a lot and you've never rolled her?? I'm thinking that if people come on here and tell me they've put a bronco through the tests and still never rolled then I don't have to worry about it, but I was out in some mud/snow the other day and I was cruisin pretty good through this trail and I felt pretty tippy. I've got 33 inch tires, 12.5 wide with a 3 inch body lift.

I go both mudding and climbing lots, currently I am running 205's beofre I was running 235's but i took them off because with the 205's i get much more stability. the 205 is the stock tire size on bronco 2 i think. You loose celarance with the smaller tire so i just go with lots of friends and make sure we have two trucks so when i get stuck i can get pulled out.

the taller it is the tippier it will be. The 33's are wide and should give you lots of stabilty they are on lots of broncos but i have never tried driving with them. My bronco has no lift or exahust witch cause so many problems when your mudding, but iam working on that. I bottomed it out on the last exahust i had and that was the end of the exaust sytem. I had my truck so deep in a hole you couldnt see out of the back window it was resting on a hill of sawdust, but with somepeople pushing it came out easy enough. My truck is mostly stock except rims adn some stuff under the hood but nothing major, and iam not sinking to much more money into because i pretty much scrued the engine 4xbin.

I actually have a rolled bronco 2 for parts. The roof does seem farely weak but from looking at teh wreckers and at other peoples trucks i often found that the drivers side is usually the most damaged. If you have money to burn putting on a roll bar wont hurt. Maybe with how high your truck is it wouldnt be a bad idea. Is your suspension soft or stiff?

so you're saying that if I roll then I'll be the one to get it the worst?? My suspension is all stock, I'm thinking about putting some blocks in my leafs in the back because my rearend is sagging.

I have a stock suspension too but i think mines on the edge of blowing up from jumping it. Mine sags in the back but thats only because i have slightly bigger tires in the front. As a word of advice dont jump your bronco it nose dives every time, one time my batter blew up when i landed.

Ya i hill climb, a fair bit but the favorite place i had to go to to hill climb got torn down a few weeks ago. Iam running out of places to go hill climbing theres some nice hills to climb around but there a long ways away. Ya i agree jumping a bronco is crazy, dont do it, i once tried to jump a ditch and didnt make it i landed square with the front axle and nothing broke still cant figure that one out. Jumping does nothing but cause problems and pain. And with how expensive the side wondows are i wana stay away form tipping on teh side at all costs

where do you live?? I'm in northern wisconsin and my favorite thing to do is find logging trails cause right now they are really muddy. I like to play around climbing and stuff in gravel pits and sand pits, there are quite a few of them around here. It sounds like you're pretty hard on your bronco and get a little crazy with it. and you've never gone over on the side?

I live on vancouver island in bc. WE have tons of logging trails around, i always try to look for other things than logging trails though. i prefer playing around on dirt piles and stuff. I used to be crazy but it started to cost so much so i baby it now, the body is almost in perfect shape so i dont wana screw that up. I have a problem with gas milage now, so i havnt done 4 bying in a while. i was considering a 302 connversion 4 it but then i know i would role it for sure. Do you know does a cadilac converter help your gas milage?

For its weight, the BII roof is okay in a mild flip onto its side. It is no worse or better then anything like it from the 80s. It does have a double panel roof. Roll it down a 50 foot hill with a 45 degree incline and you will get squished, just like any other truck except maybe a full size Chevy Sub.

imo, I would worry more about it in a high speed roll then a low speed roll.

If you have the skill and money, go for a full roll cage AND leave the roof on. Once the roll cage is in, drill a couple of holes on the interior panel in the rear and fill it with expanding foam. That will prevent the roof from flapping and popping at highway speeds.
